Facts about flamingos:
Cool Facts
- Flamingos are known for their pink feathers, but they are not born that color. Young flamingos have gray or white feathers that gradually turn pink because they eat algae and crustaceans that contain carotenoids.
- Flamingos are excellent swimmers and can swim at speeds of up to 60 km/h.
- Flamingos sleep on one leg. This helps them conserve energy by elevating one leg and keeping the body warmer by pulling it closer to the body.
- Flamingos live in large groups called "colonies" which can consist of thousands of birds.
- Flamingos have special filtering devices in their beaks that allow them to filter tiny crustaceans and algae out of the water.
- Flamingos are monogamous and often stay with the same mate for years.
- Flamingos are symbols of elegance, beauty and grace and are often a popular motif in art and fashion.
