Interesting facts about koalas

Cool Facts

  • Systematic Sleepers: Koalas sleep up to 80% of the day – a strategy to conserve energy.
  • Extremely Picky Eaters: Only about 30 eucalyptus species out of over 700 are suitable for their diet.
  • Cuddly Only in Appearance: Their fluffy fur not only protects against cold but also against heat and rain.
  • Roaring Voices: Males attract attention with deep calls – even over long distances.
  • Masterful Grip: Two thumbs on their front paws give them extra hold when climbing.
  • Pouch-dwelling Offspring: Koala babies, also called "Joeys," spend their first six months safely in their mother's pouch.
  • Unique Scents: Chest glands give males a distinct smell – a natural territory marker.

habitat

Koalas inhabit only eucalyptus forests along Australia's east coast, where they find food and shelter. However, due to deforestation, climate stress, and habitat fragmentation, they are losing more and more of their living space.

kind

Koalas belong to the order of marsupials and are the only living representatives of the family Phascolarctidae – closely related to wombats.

lifespan

Koalas are strictly dependent on eucalyptus forests and are found exclusively in specific regions of Australia's east coast. Habitat loss due to deforestation, urban development, and climate change increasingly threatens their existence.

Size

Koalas reach a body length of 60 to 85 cm and weigh between 4 and 14 kg depending on gender and region – males are usually larger and more robustly built than females.
