• Respiration and Metabolism
  Sea turtles regularly surface to breathe, but can sleep underwater for up to seven hours before needing to surface again for air. They slow down their metabolism and heart rate – up to nine minutes can pass between two heartbeats.
• Orientation and Navigation
  They use the Earth's magnetic field, currents, and other cues to navigate their routes. The leatherback turtle holds the record with dives up to 1000 meters.
• Reproduction and Survival
  Female turtles always return to their birth beach to lay eggs. Only one in a thousand hatchlings reaches adulthood.
• Speed and Adaptation
  In water, sea turtles can reach speeds of up to 25 km/h, but usually swim leisurely at one to ten km/h. For 225 million years, they have survived ice ages, natural disasters, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.

• Die Lederschildkröte (Dermochelys coriacea) ist die größte Meeresschildkrötenart. Sie kann eine beeindruckende Größe von über 2 Metern erreichen und ein Gewicht von mehreren hundert Kilogramm haben.
• Die kleinste Meeresschildkrötenart ist die Karettschildkröte (Eretmochelys imbricata). Sie ist im Vergleich zu anderen Meeresschildkröten relativ klein und erreicht eine Länge von etwa 70-90 Zentimetern und ein Gewicht von etwa 40-60 Kilogramm.
