Interesting facts about giant pandas
Cool Facts
- Bamboo Lovers: Giant pandas spend up to 14 hours a day eating bamboo, which makes up 99% of their diet. They can consume an impressive 38 kilograms daily.
- Skilled Climbers: From as young as six months old, they effortlessly climb trees – a vital talent to keep themselves safe from danger.
- Carnivores Who Love Bamboo: Although they eat almost exclusively bamboo, pandas are biologically carnivores. Their ancestors fed on meat, but they have specialized in plants over the course of evolution.
- Perfect Camouflage: Their striking black and white fur has a practical use: it helps them remain undetected in their habitat, as the white areas blend with snow and the black with shadows in the forest.
- Tiny Cubs: Newborn pandas weigh only 90 to 130 grams – about 1/900th of their mother's weight.
- Thumb for Bamboo: A specially shaped wrist bone acts like a thumb, allowing them to securely hold bamboo stalks.
- Difficult Reproduction: Pandas are considered to have low reproductive rates. Females are fertile for only 2 to 3 days a year, which makes reproduction difficult.
- Solitary with Brief Meetings: Pandas usually live alone and only meet other pandas during mating season.
- Long Childhood: Panda cubs spend up to 18 months with their mother to learn everything they need to survive.

kind
Giant pandas are part of the bear family (Ursidae) and have the scientific name Ailuropoda melanoleuca. Despite their almost exclusively plant-based diet, they are biologically classified as carnivores.
