Wissenswertes über Meeresschildkröten

Cool Facts

  • Respiration and Sleep
Sea turtles must surface regularly to breathe, yet they can sleep for an astonishing seven hours underwater before taking another breath. Their metabolism and heart rate slow down significantly to conserve oxygen – there can be up to nine minutes between heartbeats.
  • Navigation
To orient themselves, turtles use the Earth's magnetic field and currents, which help them determine their paths. The leatherback turtle is particularly impressive in this regard, diving up to 1000 meters deep.
  • Reproduction and Life Cycle
Female turtles always return to their birth beach to lay their eggs there. However, only one out of a thousand hatchlings reaches adulthood.
  • Speed and Adaptability
In water, sea turtles usually swim at a speed of one to ten km/h, but can reach peaks of 25 km/h. For 225 million years, they have defied climatic changes and natural disasters and are considered the oldest living reptiles.
