- Sea turtles regularly surface to breathe, but can sleep underwater for 4 to 7 hours by slowing down their metabolism and heartbeat. There can be up to 9 minutes between two heartbeats.
- They use the Earth's magnetic field and ocean currents for orientation, determining their travel routes.
- The leatherback turtle can dive up to 1000 meters deep, holding the record among sea turtles.
- Only one in a thousand hatchlings reaches adulthood at 20 to 30 years old.
- Females always return to the beach where they hatched to lay their eggs, no matter how far they have traveled.
- In the water, sea turtles can reach speeds of over 25 km/h, but mostly swim leisurely between 1 and 10 km/h.
- Sea turtles have existed for about 225 million years and are among the oldest living reptiles. They have survived continental drift, ice ages, natural disasters, and the extinction of the dinosaurs.
